Mirror, Mirror On The Wall…
Looking in the mirror, what do you see?
Every blemish, wrinkle, scar, lump and bump?
Do you see the young woman you once were - a twinkle in her eye, a gleam of mischievousness and hope for the future? Or do you see the woman who has lived, survived, grown, and become wiser and more confident in her skin? A fierce look in her eye determined to make the most of this one life?
Do you see the imperfections that threaten your self-esteem? Or the beauty of the life you’ve lived?
Do you see smiles and laughter in those wrinkles? Or stresses, anger and disappointments of the years gone by?
Do you see healing, survival and life in those scars? Or do you see tragedy, pain, and uncertainty?
Do those curves remind you of everything you are not? Or are they a reminder of the softness of life? The meals shared with friends and family, the afternoons in the hammock, the snuggles of safety you offer your kids?
I work hard at body positivity every day. According to lab work, I’m very healthy. I eat well, I move my body, I drink my water, I meditate and sleep. But I’m still curvy. I still don’t look like our society’s depiction of perfection and beauty.
But you know what? F*** that. I have lived a life of survival, love, laughter, and joy - and I continue to do so every day. I only get one body - one life - and I don’t see the point of making myself miserable by not enjoying the body I have.
So, I choose to love my body. Every lump, bump, wrinkle, scar. All of it. I choose to see a life well-lived and a body that will continue to carry me for many years to come. I choose to invest love into this body and this life - to make it the best it can be (even if others don’t see it).
We can spend our lives thinking we’re not enough and trying to live up to everyone else’s picture of perfection OR we can spend our lives living in joy. I choose Joy.
If you’re ready to choose love and joy this week, do me a favor, will ya? Every time you find something about your body to criticize… Find another thing you love. Somedays this will come easier than others - but stick with it. Your eyes that twinkle; your welcoming smile; the curve of your hips; your cute toes; maybe even that spectacular white streak of hair. If you look closely enough, you’ll find that you are covered with beauty! (We just tend to look past it in the rush of most days…)
Is this hard for you? Is it easier to look at everything you’re not? Is it easier to just not look? If so, I’ve been there. I know that pain and sense of hopelessness. If you’re willing, schedule a Breakthrough Session - a 45 minute chat to get you started toward a life you love. Life’s too short to spend any more time not loving the one you’ve got!
