What Is This Thing You Call…. Sleep?

How do they do it? How do they go alllll day long - work, kids, activities, book groups, workouts, family dinner, etc - and then their head hits the pillow and they go right to sleep at night?! How do they do it?

I had a client ask this recently. She seemed to think it was an impossible idea. Who on earth actually sleeps?!

So I asked more women - what happens when you crawl into bed at night?

“I lay awake thinking about all the things I wish I had done or said differently.”

“I run the to-do list for tomorrow through my head and add more items - because there’s never enough.”

“I get mad at myself for eating the donut or watching a show instead of working out - and then the little voice inside of me takes over, criticizing everything about me and reminding me that I will never succeed at anything.”

“I wonder how I could have everything I ever wanted, have done everything I was “supposed” to do, and lay here wondering if this is it? Why am I not happier?”

“I worry I left the car door open; the oven on; the wet laundry in the washer; or any number of other ‘little’ things that I tend to overlook these days as I’m running through my day.”

“Well…. I definitely don’t sleep.”

What if it was possible to silence the critter brain thoughts running through your brain at night? What if you could actually relax in the evening?

What if it was possible to turn some of these nightly ‘habits’ around…? What if there were simple tools and tricks that could actually help you to get the sleep you need?

What if… You woke up in the morning feeling rested and energized? Ready to check off the lists and show up for those who need you? What if you had the energy to not only get the “have tos” done - but had a little energy left over to enjoy your day and evening?

Sometimes, the smallest tweaks can lead to the biggest impacts. There are ways to calm the ever-running-thoughts that swirl in our minds at night.

But do me a favor and start with this: Crawl into bed tonight. Take a deep breath. Settle in, get comfy. And start thinking over the things you did well today. Successes. Things you’re proud of. Tell those negative voices to take a hike and remind yourself of the good you did today. And if you need to, remind yourself that there will be more good tomorrow.

Is this a cure-all for sleep problems? Of course not. But it’s a starting point.
