The Perfect Way to Avoid Burnout for Over-Scheduled Women

How often do you wake up and already dread the day ahead of you?

So often, we get stuck wondering things like, “how will I possibly get it all done today?” or “how can I get a little time for myself in this crazy week?”

When you’re unsure what to do, it’s hard to make any meaningful changes.

The good news is, you can easily avoid burnout by determining your top priorities and managing your time in a way that honors what is most important to you.

Today, I’ll define “burnout” and provide 5 ways to avoid it. I hope that this will give you a roadmap so you can get started with prioritizing your time and energy in order to avoid “going through the motions” and, instead, find meaning and joy in each day.

What is Burnout?  Burnout is a state of emotional, mental, and physical exhaustion that results from chronic stress and overwork (or overscheduling). It's often characterized by feelings of exhaustion, cynicism, and a sense of detachment from one's work, responsibilities, and even the things that bring us joy. Burnout can occur in any area of life, such as work, relationships, or personal life, and can have a significant impact on a person's overall well-being.

In other words:

Avoiding burnout can be challenging for anyone, but it can be especially difficult for busy moms who are juggling multiple responsibilities.  The good news is that there are ways to avoid it by being very intentional with your time and energy.

The added benefit of that intentionality is that not only will you be able to create more meaning and joy in your day-to-day life, but you’ll also be more present and connected to those you love.

Here are some tips that may help:

  • Prioritize self-care. Taking care of yourself is crucial to avoiding burnout. Don’t worry about scheduling whole spa days or hours of time for meditation and journaling, baths and candlelit dinners.  Just make sure you're getting enough sleep, eating healthy foods, and finding time to exercise. Take breaks throughout the day to recharge your batteries, even if it's just for a few minutes.  5 minutes at a time can make a huge difference in your quality of life!

  • Delegate tasks. You don't have to do everything yourself. Take a look at that never-ending to-do list.  Ask yourself: What can I let go of?  What can I put off to another time?  AND what can I delegate to someone else?  Enlist the help of your coworkers, partner, family members, or friends to take on some of the responsibilities. Hire a babysitter or house cleaner if necessary to free up more time for yourself.  People want to feel needed and help where they can - it’s ok to ask!

  • Set boundaries. First, take some time to make a list of your top values.  What’s most important to you?  Then, as you add items to your calendar and schedule - ask how those items fit with your priorities.  It's okay to say no to requests that are overwhelming or don't align with your priorities. Learn to prioritize your time and say no to commitments that don't serve your well-being or those of your family.  (I’ll admit, this takes courage, practice, and learning how to confidently communicate with others - but you can do it!  I tackle this area with clients all the time - and it can get better!)

  • Make time for hobbies and interests: Take time to engage in activities you enjoy, whether it's reading, knitting, or going for a walk. Finding time for yourself will help you feel refreshed and re-energized.

  • Practice mindfulness: Mindfulness practices such as meditation, yoga, and deep breathing can help reduce stress and anxiety, leading to a more balanced and focused life.

Of course, avoiding burnout is not a one-time fix, but a continuous process that requires ongoing commitment to self-care and balance. It's important to regularly check-in and tweak your routine and priorities as needed to ensure you're giving yourself the care and attention you deserve.
